Disc Injuries
Our spines are designed to last a lifetime. The vertebrae (spine bones) and discs (soft tissues between the bones) adapt to stressors on the body and can withstand a lot of force. Disc injuries are caused when our spines are pushed beyond their threshold and the tissues are damaged. The cause of injury can be from an abrupt physical or chemical injury or from repetitive stress.
When a disc is injured, there are many different types of classifications of disc injuries.
A bulging disc is caused when the nucleus (soft jelly-like material inside of a disc swells and puts excess pressure on the annulus (the thicker, fibrous outer portion of the disc).
Many adults walking around may have a small bulged disc in their back with no symptoms. Typically, most bulged discs will heal on their own. When a bulged disc is putting pressure on a nerve, either from physical swelling or from increased inflammation, the nerve pressure causes pain.
A herniated disc is a bulged disc where the nucleus (jelly-like center of the disc) has pushed through a tear in the annulus (the thicker, fibrous outer portion of the disc). Herniated discs can heal without surgery but it is important to reduce the swelling from the herniated disc as well as the inflamed nerve.
Stenosis is a narrowing of an opening. Spinal stenosis is cause when a vertebrae wears down and degenerates over time. The openings where the nerve exits the spine to reach other parts of the body gets smaller and puts pressure on the nerves. The pressure on the nerve causes pain.
Sciatica is a sharp shooting pain down one of both legs. It is cause by pressure on the lower nerves leaving the lower back. Bulging or herniated discs or spinal stenosis can all play a roll in sciatica symptoms.
It is important, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect you’ve injured your back, to consult a Doctor of Chiropractic. Many back injuries can be treated without drugs or surgery.
Neuropathy
What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where nerves are damaged causing weakness, burning pain, numbness, tingling, and debilitating balance problems. The damage to the nerves can be caused by many different problems in the body. Poor blood flow to the nerves, toxic levels of sugar in the blood (diabetes), chronic infections, pesticide exposure and genetic variants are a few of the causes of this debilitating condition. The cause is different for every patient and it must be discovered to help the nerves heal!
What are symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy?
Generally, symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in an effected area include:
- Numbness/Tingling
- Burning Pain
- Unusual and/or loss of sensations
- Muscle weakness
- Deep Stabbing Pain
- Balance Problems
Gut Illness
Gut Illness is an underlying cause of many conditions. The mounting research on the gut-brain connection is capturing attention and we are at the forefront of helping to educate on “why”.
You can lose 80% of function in some organs before you experience symptoms. Do you experience bloating gassiness, burping, slow healing, or chronic skin problems? These are a few of the signs you may have chronic gut illness.
